How Addictive Is A Fast Food Addiction?
Sunday, September 30th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedIn 2003, an American study concluded that fast food was “as addictive as heroin”. This is still considered a controversial conclusion, but one fact remains – people can get a fast food addiction. Fast food is usually loaded with fat and sugar – things our bodies put away in storage just in case of famine. The fat and sugar combined can give a high like legal and illegal drugs … and a crash.
Withdrawal Symptoms
You usually don’t know you have a fast food addiction until you go without and the withdrawal symptoms hit. The only way to get rid of them is to eat fast food. That sets you up for being depended on fast food for the rest of your life. These symptoms can be as painful and powerful as “clucking” (a term for the withdrawal symptoms of alcoholics or heroin addicts). They include, but are not limited to:
migraine intense headaches nerves being on edge for no reason trembling or shaking (but not to the point of seizures) chattering teeth panic attacks obsession with when you can get another fast food fix
Ah, So What?
What could possibly be so bad about a fast food addiction? Fast food is legal, relatively inexpensive and has not been linked to any crime for fast food addicts who need money. Although illegal drugs like heroin or cocaine make their slaves dangerous to others as well as themselves, you are still a danger to yourself. If you have any dependents like family or a growing business, you are behaving irresponsibly to them by risking your health with a fast food addiction.
The 2004 documentary Super Size Me followed a man who ate nothing but McDonald’s food or a month. Granted, most people don’t eat fast food for every meal, but this was a condensed experiment. A fast food addiction takes years to develop – this film hoped to speed up the process artificially. The subject gained not only a massive amount of weight, but became more irritable and quarreled more with his girlfriend.
Gaining weight and being dependent on fast food for your calorie intake will raise your chances of dying well before your “allotted threescore and seven”. Weight gain puts strain on your heart, your blood pressure and is one of the leading causes of diabetes. Weight gain also can aggravate arthritis symptoms and lower your libido. Although it might sound funny, a fast food addiction should be taken seriously.
